Vibrations caused by building sites, traffic, railway lines and industrial complexes spread over the ground, are transferred to neighbouring buildings through their foundations and set off sympathetic vibrations in their ceilings.
Such effects (immissions) are not only harmful to buildings (causing cracks) but also intolerable for the people living in those buildings (vibrations and secondary airborne noise). The Federal Immissions Protection Act therefore requires that certain thresholds for vibration immissions be met.
Vibration protection to buildings is a specialist area for consultant engineers for vibration engineering amongst whose number we count ourselves. Vibration measurements and simulations on building dynamics provide the basis for qualified construction planning as a result of which vibrations can be forecast and reduced. This also applies to demolitions, for example.
Example:
Detonation of a high-rise building (with video clip)
We will be happy to advise you in all matters regarding vibration engineering.
Without vibration protection, ceilings vibrate in resonance with ground waves.
