North German coastal regions have one primary problem to deal with: water. Understanding and controlling the power of water has always been one of our specialist areas.
Special underground construction, dockworks and floodwater protection also represent some of the most frequent tasks which our engineering company faces in the field of foundation engineering.
The Köhlbrand bridge is landmark of the hanseatic town of Hamburg, visible from miles around. Its columns are supported by numerous piles. Many ships pass under the bridge whilst thousands of vehicles cross the bridge every day. Here the highest safety standards had to be met.
After an embankment had been removed, the pile shown had to be secured against collision from a ship. A double reinforced concrete ring – the photo only shows the top one – is designed to absorb the energy of a collision and prevent any damage to the column of the bridge.
Securing the column of the bridge against collision from a ship required detailed calculations in the field of foundation engineering and vibration protection, and these calculations were carried out by us.
